Day for Night: New American Realism From April 14 to July 14, 2024, the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, in collaboration with Beirut's Aïshti Foundation, presents "Day for Night: New American Realism."
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni and Flaminia Gennari Santori, the exhibition showcases over 150 works by American artists from the Tony and Elham Salamé collection. The title, inspired by a cinematic effect and François Truffaut's 1973 film, reflects the chiaroscuro visions of artists who have captured the complex reality of the United States.
A Confluence of Art and History Set against the backdrop of Palazzo Barberini's baroque and rococo interiors, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore contemporary art in dialogue with Italian Baroque architecture. It features works by artists like Cecily Brown and Cindy Sherman, who interrogate figuration and realism in contemporary painting. The exhibition also addresses the erosion of truth in US culture, juxtaposing it with a return to figuration in contemporary art, providing a rich exploration of reality, power, and spectacle.
