Working in a broad range of materials, techniques and movements, Frank Bowling continues to push the possibilities of paint. Become acquainted with the artist's extensive body of work through highlights from across eight decades. Bowling begun with figurative work in the 1950s, transitioning in the mid 1960s to abstraction, as seen in his seminal ‘Map' paintings. In the 1970s, he created his monolithic ‘Poured’ works, followed by the heavily built-up surfaces of the 1980s paintings. Bowling’s use of collaged canvas was a formal feature of his painterly practice since the early 1990’s. Continuing into the present day, Bowling's work is ever ambitious in scope and scale, encompassing collage, poured paint, stencilling, staining, and stitched canvas, bringing together techniques honed over a lifetime of painting.
